These valves are mainly designed for the applications that needs sterile and clean processing. They are very commonly used in food, dairy, pharmaceutical, chemical and medical applications.

The common features of sanitary valves include the following:

  • Crevice free
  • Easy cleaning
  • Polished contact surfaces.

Types

Following are few different types of these valves:

  • Globe valves

These are linear motion type of valves having rounded bodies, and thus their name has been derived. Usually, they have wide application in the industry for regulating fluid flow in throttling and also on/off service.

  • Diaphragm valves

These are related with pinch valves, but here they use elastomeric diaphragm in place of elastomeric liner within the valve body for separating flow stream from closure elements.

  • Pinch valves

This kind of valve will include any valve having flexible elastomer body which can be pinched or closed to cut off flow by using mechanism meant for fluid pressure.

These pinch valves are with full bore and linear action valves hence they can be easily used in both in variable position or off/on manner or throttling service.

  • Knife or gate valves

These are linear motion type of valves where flat closure element will slide into the flow of stream for providing shut-off. Usually gate valves are divided into 2 types:

  • Parallel
  • Wedge-shaped.
  • Needle valves

Needle valves have slender, with tapered point at end of valve stem which is lowered through seat to block or restrict flow. Fluid that will be flowing through valve will turn 90ᵒ and pass through an orifice which is seat for rod with one cone shaped tip.

  • Ball valves

Ball valves provide characteristic control and tight shut-off. They will have high rangeability because of the design of regulating element, without any complications of the side loads that is typical of globe or butterfly valves.

  • Butterfly sanitary valves

These valves are very quick opening type of valves which consist of metallic circular vane or disc with its pivot that axes at 90ᵒ to the flow direction in the pipe which is when rotated on the shaft, it will seal against seats in valve body.

Normally they will be used as throttling type of valves in order to control flow.

  • Plug sanitary valves

These valves are also called stop-cock or cock valves, that dates back to the early times, where they had been developed for using in citywide plumbing systems.

Nowadays, they remain as most widely used type of valves for both throttling and on/off services.
